Last February, Headmaster Rik Dugan and Head of Lower School Paris McLean sat down with freelance writer Sarah Maraniss Vander Schaaff to talk about all-boys schools and their relevance in the context of the world we are living in. Their conversation, in part, has been included in a blog post on the Answer Sheet, the education blog of The Washington Post. The article was published on September 9.
Often in the media and in the headlines, we hear a lot of finger pointing and negative news stories. It is rare for light to shine on the positive or to hear about solutions that will help to make our world a better place. Our mission to develop creative, compassionate and courageous young men guided by the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria powers our vision to reinvent boys' education for a new generation of enlightened men and inspires our why.
We believe with all of our hearts that Princeton Academy exists so that #HeCanBe. Our students can be creative when they are given the time and space to explore, compassionate when they discover the good within themselves and courageous when their full potential is realized. Our boys can also just "be" because they are known, valued and cared for... As Headmaster Rik Dugan often states, "Our mission is a cause."
The fact is we also exist to help parents raise boys to become good men. We know that He Can Be a good man when he learns to respect and honor women as a boy, when he is engaged in healthy relationships as a boy and when his is given the right tools as a boy.
The magnitude of Princeton Academy's inclusion in a national conversation around healthy masculinity is transformational. Our fearless educators and visionary leaders work tirelessly to elevate our school as leaders in the space of boys' education. As we celebrate this moment, let us also reflect on the words of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne, "Strength of character is certainly needed to face life in the world and to stand by right principles, especially in the age in which we live."
Princeton Academy will continue to lead in a meaningful way on a global scale as we prepare to announce the Boys' Institute at Princeton Academy and co-host an International Boys' Schools Coalition event, Boys Becoming: A Conference to Reimagine How Boys Become Good Men. We will continue to share more information so please stay tuned!
