In a special recognition ceremony at Friday evening's all school cocktail party, board chair Robert A. Monsour presented founding headmaster Olen Kalkus with an engraved pewter tray to mark the 10th anniversary of Mr. Kalkus' tenure as headmaster at Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart. In his remarks, Mr. Monsour recalled the founding board's earliest meetings, which set five goals to be accomplished during the next 31 days. One of those goals was to hire a headmaster. Six weeks later, Olen arrived in Princeton from Prague and began his work as Princeton Academy's founding headmaster.
The tray is inscribed with Olen's favorite quote from Janet Erskine Stuart, "So we must remember that it is better to begin a great work than to finish a small one...the work in the rough...may look ugly and yet be full of promise....A piece of finished insignificance is no true success.... Our education is not meant to turn the children out small and finished, but seriously begun on a wide-basis. Therefore they must leave us with some self-knowledge, some energy, some purpose...If they leave us without these three things they will drift with the stream of life." Mr. Kalkus includes these words of Janet Erskine Stuart in every Princeton Academy commence address.
Mr. Monsour concluded his remarks saying, "I would argue that no one person has given such great amounts of energy and time to the Princeton Academy school community, where your sons thrive, than our founding headmaster, Olen Kalkus."
Continuing its celebration of Princeton Academy's 10th anniversary, current founding faculty were honored at the school's annual cocktail party on Friday evening. Those honored include first grade teacher Vince Geraci; Lower School art teacher and community service coordinator Debbie Gwazda; Lower School head Suzanne Kazi; Middle School assistant Barbara McKamey; Business Manager Rose Neubert; and fourth grade teacher Holly Weise. In his presentation, founding headmaster Olen Kalkus thanked the faculty for their commitment and dedication to the founding and growth of Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, noting that their willingness to "grow the school" was instrumental in Princeton Academy's early successes.
