The 4th grade enjoyed their trip to the Watershed this week.
The lower school boys enjoyed a special interactive assembly this week, titled Nature by the Yard. They first learned about carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores, and how the teeth of animals reflect the kind of diet they have. Then, they went outside and were shown berries, learning how when animals eat the berries, they actually do the plant a favor because the animal carries the seeds to a different place and helps new seeds grow when it expels the waste from its body.
After a discussion about St. Francis and his love of animals, the 4th grade religion classes spent time in the grotto sketching their favorite animals.
Wednesday was Conge for the Middle School, and the boys and faculty traveled to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia for "CSI: The Experience!" "CSI: The Experience" immerses students in hands-on science while leading them through the challenge of solving a crime. The hands-on exhibit brings to life fundamental scientific principles, numerous scientific disciplines, and the most advanced technology and techniques used today by crime scene investigators and forensic scientists.
Conge is a French word for "leave taking" or "farewell." Conge is an unannounced holiday; Sacred Heart schools across the world leave their studies and channel their energy for celebration and fun. The word "Conge" elicits a smile and shared understanding. It is a treasured Sacred Heart tradition, and a day the students anticipate each school year.

The conclusion of the 8th grade study of The Giver showcased analytical minds and creative thinking. Soccer A:
Ending this season with a record of 5-5-1 speaks to the peaks and valleys of this team's progress and performance. With one of the strongest 8th grades in recent history, a unit that has been growing together for four years, the team began its bidding with cautious optimism. Over the course of eleven games, some team goals were met, some were not, and some great goals were scored. The collective heart of the squad was on display for 52 minutes of its second game against PDS, who had delivered a loss that stung just one week before. Knuckling down and tightening up the middle of the field led to a much closer result. The team bounced back from a disappointing string of three games, where the opposing teams' nets seemed to have a force field around them, and finished the year with two impressive wins in the last week of the season. Mr. Trowbridge is very proud of the team and especially its 8th grade leaders, many of whom have played four great seasons of Princeton Academy soccer, and he looks forward to younger players filling their shoes next year.
Soccer B:
This year's soccer season showed consistent improvement in a large team full of young talent. Against both Newtown Friends and Pennington, our team improved upon losses to produce to very exciting games, earning us two ties. Goals continued to be hard to come by throughout the year as the boys learned how to be more aggressive and take advantage of scoring opportunities. In a match against Rutgers Prep late in the season, we controlled the pace of the game from beginning to end. Failing to score in that game was tough to swallow for the team. But we bounced back from that 1-0 defeat to score 3 against Pennington, our biggest offensive output of the year. Our defense showed resilience throughout the year as it fought to give our offense a chance to win games. Many new soccer players had the opportunity to learn from more experienced 6th grade defenders. This opportunity to play and learn will be an advantage when the new players become the leaders of our defense next year. We had a very large team this season. The opportunity for so many boys to play gives our team a chance to grow in skill and cohesiveness from season to season. The experience players got this year on the field will help them improve the skills they need to become contributing members of the A team in future years. Mr. Brown comes out of the season pleased with the growth of our boys as both soccer players and soccer teammates.
Cross Country:
The 2011 Cross Country team enjoyed another fine season. For the second year in a row, the team remained undefeated against all independent schools. In fact, the team was competitive against much larger public schools throughout the season as well. Coaches Deisher and Britt instilled the two main goals of the team: to have fun while running and to cheer on fellow teammates. The highlight of the year was a dominating victory in a head-to-head meet against Cranbury and Community in which Princeton Academy placed three runners in the top five overall. Also, the team finished 6th at the Ed Scott Invitational and 2nd at the Princeton Charter Invitational, first among independent schools at each event. In order to defend the home turf during a meet against 6 schools, the team swept the top three places. Indeed, the team will miss the strong running of the 8th graders but is eager to seek another successful season next year with a young crop of improving runners.

BASEBALL
The Princeton Academy Baseball team had a very successful season, matching the school's best baseball season with a 7-1 record. The only loss came to a public school with a score of 6-7. The team was led by a great group of 8th graders who will be missed next year for not only their play, but also their leadership. The team enjoyed a lot of big victories, but the biggest came against Moorestown Friends. Down 9-8 going to the bottom of the 7th inning, the team rallied back with two outs to score 2 runs and won the game. The team also averaged 12 runs per game and hit 7 homeruns during the season. Both Coach Clewell and Coach Trautwein are looking forward to next season and to see who will step up to replace the 8th graders. There is a large group of solid 5th graders, as well as a strong 7th grade class to fill the void, although this 8th grade class will be tough to replace.
LACROSSE
This year's Princeton Academy Lacrosse season was bookended by two tough games against Rutgers Prep. Playing our first game of the season away, in the rain, and with only two days practice showed this squad that we had work to do in order to combine our individual talents and gel as a team. Fortunately, our last game of the season, also against Rutgers Prep, displayed a team that had come together and learned how to achieve a common goal through teamwork. Although we did not come away with that final W, this team showed how hard it could fight with its back against the wall. After a tough first half, the 7th and 8th grade leaders buckled down and won the 3rd quarter. Just as we alternated between wins and losses this season, the 4th quarter seemed to alternate goals for and against. However, this team left everything on the field just like our second game against Hun, which was also extremely close. Coaches Trowbridge and Ferrante could not be more proud of this team and thanks the 8th grade for its excellent leadership. The whole team hopes to pick up where we left off this year, improving our stick skills, our fundamentals, and teamwork for another successful season!
TENNIS
The Princeton Academy Tennis Team had its most successful season in school history with a record of 4-4-1. The players worked throughout the season to develop their forehands, backhands, volleys, and serves, but perhaps more imperative to their success was the development of their inner game, or the mental aspect to the sport. The team got off to a great start with a victory over Princeton Day School in the first match of the season. Throughout the season, several players displayed an indomitable will by coming back from huge deficits to win other key matches. Indeed, Coaches Brown and Deisher will miss the consistency of the 8th grade players but look forward to seeing the younger players develop next year.

Princeton Academy's "A" team record of 4-8 doesn't show how hard fought many of the games were this season. They fought hard until the final game and never gave up. Often outsized, but never out hustled, the "B" basketball team learned to play with grit and determination during the 2010-2011 season. By achieving victory over archrivals Rutgers Prep, Hun, and Pennington, the team ended the year on a three game winning streak. In fact, the team finished the year with a respectable mark of 6 wins and 7 losses. The trademark of the team was its aggressive half court-trapping defense, which often created turnovers that led to easy baskets on the offensive end. Coach Deisher enjoyed watching his team develop through hard work and looks forward to next year.
Squash
This was an extremely exciting year for squash at Princeton Academy. Transitioning from a club that met only once a week in previous years into a full team sport was a challenge that each of our players took head-on. Our loaded practice and match schedule provided ample time and opportunities for improvement over the course of this winter, and every player did just that. Players who came into this season with some experience proved they had the drive to reach a new level, and those who had not yet played much squash were able to compete and climb our ladder. We had a tall order ahead of us when scheduling matches, and we certainly had to travel some great distances to find other middle school programs, some of which were well-established with tremendous players. Mr. Trowbridge was proud of our team for giving it our best shot throughout the season, sticking to our game plan, and holding our heads high as gentlemen. This team represented the school with style and class, and the future is incredibly bright for squash at Princeton Academy.
Wrestling
The Princeton Academy Wrestling Team pushed through an injury-plagued season. Though we had small numbers, the competitive drive was evident throughout the season. With the addition of Coach Herman and a strong fifth grade class, the future looks very bright. We ended the season with three eighth graders competing in the Mercer County Tournament. We are definitely looking forward to the years ahead with the wrestling program.

This week, the snow presented many challenges. Lower School drop-off was moved to the front door on Wednesday morning, and the 8th graders stepped right in to help the little ones get out of their cars and downstairs to their classrooms. They grabbed shovels and kept the front walk clear.
A big Princeton Academy "Friday Thank You" to Dave Hewins and Dave Wall for keeping our roads and walks open, so we can keep our doors open to serve our students and families.
