Middle School Math
Program Overview
The mathematics program emphasizes problem solving and analytical thought and is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in algebra by the end of the eighth grade. Princeton Academy uses the Everyday Mathematics Program that, in fifth and sixth grades, helps students incorporate mathematics in their everyday work and play. Students learn the math that will shape their ways of thinking about mathematics and foster the development of mathematics intuition and understanding. In the seventh and eighth grades, students solidify their knowledge of arithmetic and learn the requisite skills needed for work in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. Again, mathematical concepts are developed through real world applications.
Goals and Objectives
- The first objective is to emphasize a problem-solving approach based on everyday situations that develops critical thinking.
- The second objective is to emphasize mathematical communication, including understanding and evaluating the mathematical thinking and strategies of others.
- The third objective is to emphasize frequent practice of basic skills through ongoing program routines and mathematical games.
- The fourth objective is to emphasize an instructional approach that revisits topics regularly to ensure full concept development.
- The students' learning will range from rote memorization of facts to the development of new methods for solving problems.
- The students' learning will range from the rote identification of properties to the application of math in realistic situations.
- The students' learning will range from the rote application of ideas to the discovery of new applications for mathematical ideas.
