Soccer A:
Ending this season with a record of 5-5-1 speaks to the peaks and valleys of this team's progress and performance. With one of the strongest 8th grades in recent history, a unit that has been growing together for four years, the team began its bidding with cautious optimism. Over the course of eleven games, some team goals were met, some were not, and some great goals were scored. The collective heart of the squad was on display for 52 minutes of its second game against PDS, who had delivered a loss that stung just one week before. Knuckling down and tightening up the middle of the field led to a much closer result. The team bounced back from a disappointing string of three games, where the opposing teams' nets seemed to have a force field around them, and finished the year with two impressive wins in the last week of the season. Mr. Trowbridge is very proud of the team and especially its 8th grade leaders, many of whom have played four great seasons of Princeton Academy soccer, and he looks forward to younger players filling their shoes next year.
Soccer B:
This year's soccer season showed consistent improvement in a large team full of young talent. Against both Newtown Friends and Pennington, our team improved upon losses to produce to very exciting games, earning us two ties. Goals continued to be hard to come by throughout the year as the boys learned how to be more aggressive and take advantage of scoring opportunities. In a match against Rutgers Prep late in the season, we controlled the pace of the game from beginning to end. Failing to score in that game was tough to swallow for the team. But we bounced back from that 1-0 defeat to score 3 against Pennington, our biggest offensive output of the year. Our defense showed resilience throughout the year as it fought to give our offense a chance to win games. Many new soccer players had the opportunity to learn from more experienced 6th grade defenders. This opportunity to play and learn will be an advantage when the new players become the leaders of our defense next year. We had a very large team this season. The opportunity for so many boys to play gives our team a chance to grow in skill and cohesiveness from season to season. The experience players got this year on the field will help them improve the skills they need to become contributing members of the A team in future years. Mr. Brown comes out of the season pleased with the growth of our boys as both soccer players and soccer teammates.
Cross Country:
The 2011 Cross Country team enjoyed another fine season. For the second year in a row, the team remained undefeated against all independent schools. In fact, the team was competitive against much larger public schools throughout the season as well. Coaches Deisher and Britt instilled the two main goals of the team: to have fun while running and to cheer on fellow teammates. The highlight of the year was a dominating victory in a head-to-head meet against Cranbury and Community in which Princeton Academy placed three runners in the top five overall. Also, the team finished 6th at the Ed Scott Invitational and 2nd at the Princeton Charter Invitational, first among independent schools at each event. In order to defend the home turf during a meet against 6 schools, the team swept the top three places. Indeed, the team will miss the strong running of the 8th graders but is eager to seek another successful season next year with a young crop of improving runners.
